History on display downtown Saranac Lake
News Release from
Amy Catania, Executive Director
Historic Saranac Lake
Saranac Lake, NY — On Friday, November 30, an exhibition of models by John Wheeler of the lost buildings of Saranac Lake will be unveiled downtown. The exhibit, titled “Remember When?” will be displayed for the holiday season in the windows of the former Sears building at 66 Main Street. The models will go on display on Friday, in conjunction with the Village Tree Lighting and Sparkle Christmas Sale at the Harrietstown Town Hall.
Eighteen models of the lost buildings of Saranac Lake will be on display along with historic photos and captions. The collection of models represents four years of painstaking work by local resident and history enthusiast, John Wheeler. Mr. Wheeler serves as the building superintendent of the Harrietstown Town Hall, and in his spare time, he researches and carefully recreates the historic buildings of Saranac Lake.
Historic Saranac Lake showed some of the models last summer in a short term exhibit at the Saranac Laboratory Museum. “Afterwards, we got a lot of calls from local people asking if they would be on display again,” said Executive Director, Amy Catania. “We are so glad to be getting John’s work back out into the public, with some wonderful new additions such as the Berkeley Hotel and the Pontiac Theatre. It’s exciting to be showing these beautiful models in the heart of historic downtown for the holiday season. We are grateful to the building’s owner, Paulo Magro, for making the venue available.”
