EVENT CALENDAR

HISTORY DAY ON LOWER SARANAC
9/6/2008

Historic Saranac Lake will be sponsoring a History Day on September 6, 2008. The topic will be the history of Lower Saranac Lake. The public will be invited to view exhibits and share stories at the historic Guggenheim camp.

With the help of volunteers, Historic Saranac Lake will create some simple exhibits on aspects of Lower Saranac Lake History, including historic camps and hotels such as Martin's / Miller's Hotel, the Ampersand Hotel, with its boathouse and golf course and the Algonquin Hotel. Exhibits will also feature some of the famous people who visited the lake, such as Mark Twain and Albert Einstein.

The idea for the History Day grew out of a query that Historic Saranac Lake received regarding the platform tents that were once a part of the Lower Lake landscape. Historian and Executive Director Mary Hotaling realized that the history of the platform tents has never been effectively captured. Historic Saranac Lake is inviting the public and Lower Lake property owners to bring stories, pictures, and artifacts to display regarding the tent platforms, or any other aspect of the history of the Lower Lake.

Anyone with information they wish to share about the Lower Lake, or who would like to volunteer their time with the project, please contact Historic Saranac Lake at historicsaranaclake@verizon.net or call (518) 891-4606.

A donation of $5 at the door is suggested to help defray costs of organizing the event.
